The Yarn Harlot recently posted about packing for a weekend trip to Wisconsin for a weekend, and expressed a little concern that she wasn’t taking enough with her. I can totally relate. Robert and I are headed to Italy for 9 days. Being the Type A, organizational freak that I am, I’ve been making lists and checking things off of them since last year. I’ve got a schedule of what to wear when. That list is cross-checked against required clothing. I’ve got a list of things to buy, and I’ve got a list of everything that’s packed, and whether or not it’s in our carry ons or checked bags.
I’ve checked weather.com so I know the temperatures and whether or not to expect rain. Robert and I bought new comfy walking shoes and have broken them in. I bought snacks. I wound yarn and printed copies of patterns and have the right size needles. Almost everything is neatly contained in a packing cube or ziplock baggie. I’ve got maps of where we’ll be and yarn stores we might come across, and how to find the Hard Rock Cafes in Venice and in Rome.
We’ve got passports and travel insurance, and I’ve got multiple copies of them in each of our bags. I’ve also scanned documents and e-mailed them to myself so I’ll have access to electronic copies should the need arise. I’ve e-mailed the appropriate people here our itinerary and contact information for the hotels and the people in our group who will have cell phones.
I’ve charged the camera batteries and iPod, and have the camera itself and extra memory cards. I’ve got the binoculars (to see the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel). We’ve got several full length movies on our BlackBerries and iPods, and I’ve got music and all the podcasts I need to catch up on. We’ve got our earphones. We’ve got book lights. I’ve got a first aid kit and all the medications we might need while we’re gone. I’ve got Lisa lined up to house sit for us, and she’s got a Google Doc list of reminders.
I’ve got a summary sheet of helpful Italian phrases, a non-connected version of an English-Italian dictionary on my BlackBerry, my sheet music, my music folder, and a summary of what we’ll see and where we’ll be. I’ve got a couple of Moleskines to keep a diary of the trip, and I’ve got the Edirol recorder to record snippets for a Knit Together podcast episode.
We’ve got toothpaste and toothbrushes and deodorant in our carry on bags, because it’s an overnight flight, and I’ve got my makeup and travel-sized Chi. I’ve contacted the credit card company to let them know we’ll be out of the country (not that we use credit, but this really is a convenience matter for us), and we’ve ordered a small amount of Euros to have just in case.
I’ve checked the baggage requirements multiple times, and Robert’s measured and remeasured our 2 larger suitcases (which are of the 26″ variety). I’ve got luggage tags inside and out, and our trip tags on the handles as well. We’ve got TSA approved locks. We’ve got a ride to the airport at 4:30 a.m. Friday morning.
I’ve looked at my lists, and I’ve looked at our bags, and if I’ve forgotten something, I don’t have a clue what it could be. So what’s the problem? With all of the stuff I’ve listed, both mine and Robert’s bags are less than half full. Which means we shouldn’t have trouble finding space to bring stuff back, but I’m a little stressed thinking I’ve forgotten something. Plus, I need to fill in the extra space in our bags a little so stuff doesn’t go flying around.

So what else goes in the bag? Dudes. How crazy is this? I’ve got bubble wrap.

Did I Forget Something?

I’m sure you’ll forget something but that will be ok. Have a safe and fun trip! God bless your travels!!! We’ll miss you!!
So you do have room for me.
Tammy, you crack me up! You would have wigged out if you saw my packing! I went to Raleigh, NC in January. A little get away just for me. I worked the night before until 1100pm. My flight left at 6am. I had to leave for the airport by 345am. I was putting in laundry when I got home from work! I didnt sleep, I packed and I left the house by 335am, ahead of schedule! That would completely freak you out!
Have a good time! I will be thinking good thoughts for you and hubby for the trip. And I am planning on getting back on my blog in April, so I will see you then!
Wow! You need a vacation after all of the prep work! Whew…I need to put my feet up.
Enjoy the trip…hope everything falls into place.
