“Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye . . .”
I don’t know what kind of crazy person came up with that saying, but let me tell you, they’re nuts. Sticking a needle in one’s eye hurts like heck, and I know. And, no, it wasn’t a knitting project gone bad – it wasn’t that kind of needle.
Right before Christmas I discovered a small hard cyst on the edge of my eyelid. At first I thought it was a pimple, and tried to scrape it off or pop it with my fingernail. That hurt, so I stopped. I had my regular eye doctor appointment coming up, so I left it alone and waited. But it annoyed me. I didn’t like seeing it when I looked in the mirror, and it rubbed against my eyeball at times.
My eye doctor looked at it and said if he tried to take it off, it would hurt, so he was sending me back to the surgeon. Now, I’ve had Lasik, and remember how badly that hurt at the time, but I was unprepared for this. The surgeon told the assistant to prepare some numbing drops and to get the tiny scissors. Drops, okay, I can deal with that. But wait – drops only numb your eyeball, not the eyelid. He had to stick a needle in my eyelid to numb it – oh, my, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow! “You’ll feel a little prick . . .” Ya think? Holy crap! “This will sting a little . . .” I’m cringing even as I type this. I have never felt pain like this; maybe I’m a wimp, but it hurt really bad.
Removing the cyst once I was numb wasn’t too bad; it was just the pressure of him pulling on my eyelid and not blinking for 60 seconds. Then when I got home and the numbing started to wear off – yeah, not fun.
Thank goodness that’s over with.
Ouch!
