Rhinebeck 2011 Recap

It’s been two whirlwind weekends in a row, and I’m glad to be home for a while.  Over Columbus Day weekend, I was at my annual Knit Together, Springfield Retreat, but you can read all about that here.  Back to work for a couple of days, and then it was time to catch a flight to Hartford, Connecticut  and drive to Rhinebeck for the New York Sheep & Wool Festival.  This was my third time to the event and it was a blast as always.

I met up with my friend Lynn at the airport and we drove to Kingston where we met the rest of our group:  Karen, Stacy (and her daughter, Emily), Druanna, and Rose-Marie.  After dinner and hanging in the hotel lobby knitting, it was time to get ready for the festival.

We were up early on Saturday to drive to the fairgrounds.

We saw yarn:

Lynn and I then took the gang to the train station and we drove to Massachusetts to visit WEBS on Monday before flying home. It was a small miracle that we both got everything packed into the suitcases we brought.

Rhinebeck is by far my favorite fiber event. I’m already looking forward to next October!

Fiber Daze

So last weekend after getting back from Orlando, I worked for two days and then after work on Thursday picked up Adrienne at the airport.  After a quick dinner at the Price Cutter Bistro (which is really yummy), we headed to Neosho, Missouri for our weekend at the inaugural Fiber Daze.

I took a Portuguese Knitting class from my friend Linda, and it was awesome.  I also took an acid dyeing class from Dianne at Morning Moon Alpacas, and definitely want to try my hand at dyeing more yarn.  I was fortunate to teach a beginning knitting class, and also my toe-up socks class.  Adrienne taught socks cuff-down – we have a friendly rivalry with our preferred techniques.

I was fighting a cold all weekend, so I didn’t take any pictures except with Adrienne’s camera.  There was a fun fashion show Friday night and we had so much fun hanging with our dear friends from the Southwest Missouri Fiber Folks Guild.  Saturday night we headed back to Springfield and Adrienne fell in love with our monster dog, Jed.  Jed fell in love with the bare yarn I bought from Dianne.

The weekend was over too soon and after brunch at Hemingway’s where Christa joined us, we did a quick driving tour of Springfield and then it was back to Chicagoland for A.  I can’t wait until March when we get to go to the Missouri Fiber Retreat again.

Disney Sidetrack

I have a conference every year in September, and this year it was in Orlando.  It’s been 7 years since Robert and I have been to Disney World, so we flew down a day early to see the Mouse.

We bought one-day hopper passes (discounted for conference attendees), and parked at Epcot before taking the monorail to start our day at the Magic Kingdom.  This was one of the parking lots – crazy!

And we were the only people on the lower level of the ferry to the Magic Kingdom.

I love Small World, and there was a sheep!

The line was too long for Pooh. Bummer.

The obligatory castle shot.

Back at Epcot, Spaceship Earth.

Robert stood in line for fish and chips in the World Showcase’s England.

We really rode all the rides we wanted to, including Soarin’, which I will never do again! It was cool, but really scary for me.

The next day we made a quick trip over to Daytona Beach. We just can’t get that close to an ocean and not stick our toes in the sand. The water was really rough, though, so we couldn’t get in and swim.

It was a good little diversion (and, oh yeah, the conference was really good, too.)

Stitches Midwest

It seems I barely had the chance to recover from all the fun that was Sock Summit before Ginger, Christa, and I hit the road driving to Chicagoland for Stitches Midwest.  I’d been two years before, but this was their first time at the event, and Christa’s first ever big yarny event.

We left after work on Thursday and spent the night in Springfield, IL.  I was so excited that Smokey Bones, a BBQ restaurant we used to have, had onion rings back on the menu.  They had the best onion rings around, and for some crazy reason took them off the menu.  Big mistake.  Robert and I used to drive out of our way when traveling to eat at any of their restaurants nearby, and when the onion rings left, so did we.  So the girls and I had a late night dinner and the pulled pork was ok, but the onion ring recipe had changed.  I was so disappointed.  So now there’s no reason to go back to Smokey Bones.  :-(

Anyway, the next morning we drove on into Chicago and picked up Karen from Midway, and then met Adrienne at her office to park the car.  A had to work the rest of the day, so the rest of us took a stroll up Michigan Avenue, and had lunch at the new Chick-fil-A (which is one of the few stores that has their new cookies available).  We went back to A’s office where Christa had to get her husband to answer the phone, scan and e-mail her ticket to her so she could reprint it. Oops.

We then headed to A’s home where we had a yummy dinner of shrimp and pasta and showered her with surprise hostess gifts we’d been planning forever.

Since Ginger had just had a birthday, and Karen’s and Christa’s were coming up, we had a few gifts for them as well.

We also had cupcakes, which is becoming a knitterly tradition.

The next morning we were up early to hit the road to Schaumburg. We saw a sample of Tabitha’s Arwen Keyhole Scarf hanging in the Fiber Optic Booth.

We made many, many visits to Miss Babs’ booth.

Christa and Miss Babs

I met THE Lily Chin.

We met up with new friends from the YOSS group, Dana/klamik and Michelle/Meezercat (who let me go off unsupervised for one more trip back to Miss Babs, LOL).

YOSS friends

And at the end of the night, they all joined me for my podcast and surprised me with a gift as well!

As my friend Lu says, this is just wrong – on so many levels.

Sock Summit Recap

At the beginning of 2011, I’d mentioned to Robert that I’d like to attend Sock Summit this year, as I didn’t get to go in 2009. We already had our vacation to Colorado planned, and I had my ticket booked for Rhinebeck in October, and it just didn’t seem practical. As the date approached, though, the more I wished I could go, and Robert said, “Let’s make this happen for you.” I have the best husband ever!

So last Wednesday my sister, niece, and great-nephew took me to the Branson airport for my flight to Portland. If you’ve never been to the Branson airport, just picture Bass Pro with airplanes.

2011-07-27_10-44-55_142.jpg

My flight to Denver was uneventful, but the second leg to Portland was delayed by about 2 hours. I finally made it, got checked into the hotel, and eagerly awaited the next three days.

Thursday, I took “Photographing your Fiber” with Franklin Habit, which was an excellent class, in spite of it being a little crowded.

003

I also took “Two at a Time Socks – the War and Peace Method” with Kate Atherley. I was really intrigued by this technique going in, but after about an hour, I knew I didn’t want to do it again. The method is just too fiddly to be enjoyable.

The market preview opened at 4:30 and people were lining up about two hours ahead of time, so that was not exactly an enjoyable experience. I did get a few things on my list, but saved the rest for other times that weren’t so chaotic.

020

Thursday night was the opening night ceremony with Stephanie, Tina, and ST-2. Even when completely exhausted and not feeling well, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee is one of the funniest people on the planet. And it was awesome with Tina presented her with a gift of the “Sock Gate.”

007

There was also a quick rehearsal of the upcoming flash mob.

013

Friday morning I made it to the market early and made a few purchases, and also was first in line to get Stephanie to sign my books she’d written. I spent the afternoon with Amy Singer, editor of Knitty, in her design class. That night was the Sock Hop, but I skipped it to try and catch up on rest for the rest of the Summit.

Saturday morning I was at the Convention Center bright and early for Anna Zilboorg’s lecture, “The Deeper Meaning of Sock Knitting.” It was just a humbling experience to be near her – the woman is quite simply brilliant.

025

That afternoon I took JC Briar’s design class, and although it was good, I was so tired that I don’t think I got everything out of it that I could. If I get to go back, I’ll ease up on the classes and not overdo it.

Saturday night was Stephanie’s lecture, “This is Your Brain on Knitting.” Only she could take the subject of many scientific studies about the brain and tie it to knitting, and have the audience falling out of their chairs laughing. She even cracked herself up once – I wish I could hear it again.

Throughout the weekend, I got to see many friends, most of whom I met at various Spring Flings: Megann/CraftyPancakes, Denise/Deknits, Kathy/kknitterkc, Ellen/kinelle, and I spent a lot of time with Jessica/Showmeyourknits. I also saw Lynda, and met a few Plurkers, in addition to being recognized by some of my podcast viewers, which was awesome.

2011-07-30_10-52-15_28.jpg

A 6:15 a.m. flight meant getting up at 3:30 a.m. to get dressed, finish packing, catch the train, get to the airport, through security, and finally headed home. I was completely wiped out, but it was worth it.

If you’d like to see video of Sock Summit, Episode 34 of my podcast, The Proverbial Knitter, is all about it. Enjoy – I know I did!

Fiber U Recap

I spent last weekend in the booming metropolis of Lebanon, Missouri for the second annual Fiber U event sponsored by MOPACA. Vendors and instructors had to be residents of Missouri or one of the adjacent states.

When I was at Fiber Retreat in Jefferson City in March of this year, I asked Liz of Whirlwind Ranch about teaching next year at Fiber U. She asked what I would teach, and when I said “knitting toe-up socks,” she asked if I could teach this year.

So I created handouts, samples, and ordered supplies, and last weekend I taught Toe-Up Socks on One Long Circular Needle to 13 students in two classes. And it was a blast! I definitely learned some things from the experience, for example, I really need to spell things out in my class descriptions to avoid misunderstandings, and I got a good feel for exactly how much can be accomplished in a 4-hour class.

I also learned that I really enjoy teaching in a classroom, so I’ll be developing some more outlines and handouts, and submitting proposals to events in the area.

Next up, I’ll be teaching my Toe-Up Socks class at Fiber Daze in Neosho, Missouri, September 23-24, as well as Beginning Knitting for Adults. Registration is open now, so sign up and join me!

Fiber Daze and Fiber U

I’ve blogged before about my two previous adventures to the Missouri Fiber Retreat that happens in March every year, and I’ve met some awesome people there.  Those connections have resulted in me teaching at my first fiber event, Fiber U, in Lebanon, Missouri next weekend, July 9-10.  If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by and check out the marketplace.  There were some awesome vendors there last year, which was the inaugural year.

And coming up is another first time event, Fiber Daze in Southwest Missouri.  Some of the fiber addicts involved with Jeff City were asked to start another event in the fall, and Fiber Daze was born.  I had only just recently joined the Fiber Folks of Southwest Missouri guild, and was able to hop in the thick of things and volunteer.  I’ll be teaching two classes at Fiber Daze.

Registration for Fiber Daze opens today!  If you’re in Missouri, Northwest Arkansas, Northeast Oklahoma, or Southeast Kansas, then Neosho, Missouri is only a short hop away.  Check out the website and come join us in September.  Hope to see you there!
